The EU Mission: Restore our Ocean and Waters is one of the Missions that the European Union has established that aims to protect and restore the health of our ocean and waters through research and innovation, citizen engagement and blue investments. The Mission’s new approach will address the ocean and waters as one and play a key role in achieving climate neutrality and restoring nature.
EU Missions are a coordinated effort by the Commission to pool the necessary resources in terms of policies and regulations, as well as other activities. They also aim to mobilise and activate public and private actors, such as EU Member States, regional and local authorities, research institutes, farmers and land managers, entrepreneurs and investors to create real and lasting impact. Missions engage with citizens to boost societal uptake of new solutions and approaches.
In a interview, Spyros Kouvelis, Board Member of the EU Mission: Restore our Ocean and Waters, delved into main objectives of the EU Mission and the important role that the ocean can play in addressing climate change, working closely with the EU Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change, the one NEUROCLIMA is part of.
When questioned about how NEUROCLIMA can contribute to the success of the EU Mission, Spyros Kouvelis argued that the project can provide capacity and know-how to connect climate change policies with ocean, fisheries and coastal policies, promoting synergies and connections between Missions to tackle the muldimensional challenge that is climate change.
