On 15 July 2021, western Germany and Belgium experienced a tragedy that shattered the illusion of Europe’s climate safety. Torrential rain turned peaceful rivers into destructive torrents, sweeping away homes, livelihoods, and more than 220 lives. To ensure that this profound loss – and the millions of others felt across the globe- is never forgotten, the EU established 15 July as the annual EU Day for the Victims of the Global Climate Crisis.
At Neuroclima, we invite our community to transform this day of commemoration from a moment of passive mourning into a powerful catalyst for a more resilient, active, and climate-proof Europe.
The climate crisis is no longer an abstract, future threat; it is a lived reality that is fundamentally reshaping our communities today. The empirical evidence is overwhelming: Europe is now the fastest-warming continent on Earth.
This rapid warming is already making its presence felt across the continent:
- Extreme heat remains Europe’s deadliest climate hazard. Over the last 40 years, 95% of all weather-related deaths on the continent have been linked to heatwaves—claiming an estimated 48,000 lives in 2023 alone.
- In 2025, devastating wildfires scorched 380,000 hectares of land in Spain and consumed 3% of Portugal’s entire landmass, showing just how rapidly our ecosystems are drying out.
- These are not distant statistics to the public. In 2025, 38% of Europeans reported feeling personally exposed to climate-related risks.
At Neuroclima, we understand that high-level policy is fundamental, but only half the battle. True climate resilience starts on the ground. Our goal is to translate scientific data and policy targets into real-world action, helping communities understand climate risks and discover practical steps they can take to adapt.
This 15 July, we invite you to honor the victims of the global climate crisis also with action. Let this day be the moment you engage with your local community’s climate initiatives, adapt your home to extreme weather, and support efforts to build a greener, safer neighborhood. By turning our grief into resilience, we can build a Europe capable of weathering whatever storms may come.
