The Summit of the Future originated from a recommendation in the Our Common Agenda report, an initiative launched by the UN Secretary-General António Guterres for ideas on how better to respond to current and future challenges. Its aim is two-fold: accelerate efforts to meet our existing international commitments, and take concrete steps to respond to emerging challenges and opportunities.
During the UN General Assembly High-level Week 2024, the Summit of the Future convened in New York, bringing world leaders together to forge a new international consensus on how we deliver a better present and safeguard the future. Building upon established frameworks such as the UN Charter, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the 2030 Agenda, the Paris Agreement, and the Addis Ababa Action Agenda, the Summit of the Future delved into the practical strategies for achieving its aspirations.
As a result, world leaders adopted the Pact for the Future, which includes a Global Digital Compact and a Declaration on Future Generations as annexes. The Pact covers a broad range of themes including peace and security, sustainable development, climate change, digital cooperation, human rights, gender, youth and future generations, and the transformation of global governance.
The Pact for the Future recognises that “climate change is one of the greatest challenges of our time, with adverse impacts that are disproportionately felt by developing countries, especially those that are particularly vulnerable to the adverse effects of climate change”.
The world leaders compromise in strengthen the actions to address climate change by “accelerating efforts globally towards net zero emission energy systems”, “accelerating zero- and low-emission technologies”, and further emphasising “the importance of conserving, protecting and restoring nature and ecosystems towards achieving the Paris Agreement temperature goal”.
Consequently, the support for adaptation and for building resilience must be “significantly scaled up to implement the decision to double adaptation finance, to support the urgent and evolving need to accelerate adaptation and build resilience”.
NeuroClima welcomes the adoption of the Pact for the Future and the forefront place given to fighting climate change and its consequences in the actions to be taken. Climate change is a multidimensional phenomenon that affects every aspect and sector of today’s society. As a result, the solutions must also be multidimensional and focus on prevention, adaptation and building resilience.
